A Traveler’s Guide to Reading Hotel Impact Reports
Five questions to ask any property that claims to be sustainable—whether or not it appears on Biospheric.

Impact reports range from glossy to genuine. Use these five questions as a portable filter.
1. What is the boundary?
Does the report cover only the hotel building, or also food systems, guest transport claims, and owned vehicles? Clear boundaries beat impressive-sounding totals.
2. Intensity or absolute?
Absolute energy use can fall because occupancy fell. Intensity metrics (per guest night, per m²) tell a clearer operational story.
3. Reduction or offset?
Look for trajectories. Offsets can complement reductions; they should not replace them in the headline.
4. Who verified this?
Third-party assurance, certification audits, and open methodologies matter. Self-declared excellence is a starting point for skepticism.
5. What failed?
Mature operators discuss challenges: a waste contractor change, a drought year, a retrofit delay. Perfect narratives are usually incomplete ones.
When a property answers these well, you are not “being difficult.” You are practicing the same care you expect from the place you sleep.
