Beyond the Towel Card: What Real Hotel Sustainability Looks Like
Linen reuse programs are table stakes. Here’s how to read energy intensity, waste diversion, and certifications without getting lost in greenwash.

The hospitality industry has spent two decades perfecting the language of “eco.” Towel cards, plastic key cards swapped for paper, and lobby plants do not constitute a sustainability strategy. Travelers who care—and the operators who deserve their loyalty—need better tools.
Start with intensity, not marketing
Energy intensity (kWh per guest night) and water intensity (liters per guest night) are blunt instruments, but they are comparable. A boutique lodge at 18 kWh/guest-night is operating in a different universe from a regional average near 50–70. Ask for the last 12–24 months of data. If a property cannot share it, that is the answer.
Certifications are necessary, not sufficient
GSTC-recognized schemes—Green Key, EarthCheck, Green Globe, Travelife, and high-tier LEED or BREEAM—provide independent structure. They are not interchangeable, and none guarantee excellence alone. Pair the certificate with performance data and social practices.
Carbon: prefer reduction trajectories
Offsetting has a role, especially for residual emissions. Leadership looks like year-over-year reduction, renewable procurement, efficient envelopes, and honest Scope accounting. Pure offset claims without operational progress are a yellow flag.
Social is material
Fair wages, local sourcing percentages, community investment, and cultural respect are not “soft.” They determine whether tourism regenerates or extracts. At Biospheric, people and community are a first-class Li domain, not a brochure claim.
